Documentary: Eames: The Architect & The Painter

Happy Friday Everyone! Did you get a dumping of snow like we did? The first snow of the winter season. How crazy is that?! Today is my little boyfriend TJ's birthday. HAPPY 2ND BDAY TJ!!! Wow I can't believe he is two already.

Ok back to the title of this blog post. Last night I was in a documentary mode and came across this movie- Eames: The Architect & The Painter. I was intrigued and had to check it out.

This is the trailer for the movie.

Reviews of the movie:
"Well-crafted and insightful. A must for those with an interest in modern design."
- Sura Wood, Hollywood Reporter
"Between the wide array of interviewees and surplus of colorful archival materials, the deftly assembled pic has nary a dull moment." - Dennis Harvey, Variety
"Superb. A dazzling, sensory adventure. An extraordinary and enjoyable history of how two people influenced so much of our thinking and surroundings today." - Tom Keogh, Seattle Times
"A must-see for any art enthusiast." - Sean Oliver, Campus Circle

Early on in the movie someone said this quote "They give shape to America's 20th Century." And did they ever!

It all started with a chair and as soon as I saw it I knew the chair I just didn't know who made it, and I think you will feel the same way.

My sister has a very similar chair in her bedroom!

Ok now that you know a little about the designers (husband and wife Charles and Ray Eames) here are a few of the great quotes from the movie that were also quotes of Charles.

"Eventually everything Connects."  Furniture, architecture, photography, film was all connected in the Eames office. (901 W. Washington, Venice Beach, CA)

"We wanted to make the best for the most for the least."
(What a great line!)

"Take your pleasure seriously."

It was said the Eames Chair was the greatest design of the 20th Century. Charles and Ray designed furniture for the Herman Miller Company.    http://hermanmiller.com/Designers/Eames

But Charles and Ray were so much more than chair designers. They made splints for wonder soldiers, to photography, films, toys, games, interiors, graphics, multimedia exhibits, and designed/built their home.

I absolutely fell in love this couple and want to live my life like them. They worked and played and played where they work. Their office was a circus and they were surrounded by visual stimulation. I want that environment where it no longer feels like work but something you truly love to do... and get paid for it.  They enjoyed life and took silly portraits.

I'm not finding the funny portraits they took on google so you will just have to watch this documentary to see the wonderful life they lived. I really enjoyed this documentary and I think anyone interested in art, modern design or the 20th Century would like it too.
