Happy Halloween!

Happy Halloween!! I hope you had a great weekend! Justin and I won "Best Couple" Costume!!

I did a bad job of getting everyone's costumes.

The host and hostess: Frankenstein and his bride!
Their costumes were AMAZING. They wouldn't let us vote for them.

The prize!

Close-up of the trophy. It says "Best Costume."

My friend and two of her friends were the Three Blind Mice. They all looked great. What was your favorite costume you saw out?  Please leave a comment I would love to hear how creative people are!

Project Collaboration with Pam from Something Shiny

Last week I did a project collaboration with my friend Pam. Pam is a friend from high school and like me is into crafty things, art, and Pinterest!! She also started writing a blog about her life, her jobs, and the little things that make her day. She has a great comical style of writing. You will die reading them.
Like this one: http://somethingshiny24.blogspot.com/2011/08/day-in-life-of-bernie.html
Or this one: http://somethingshiny24.blogspot.com/2011/06/goose-poop.html

You can check out her blog here: http://somethingshiny24.blogspot.com/
(Ok I brought you followers now you have to post more often!!! :) )

She found this image and wanted to re-create it. So I told her I would paint the tree, and she could apply the buttons.

_________________________________

So this is how our project turned out.

I painted the tree:

I always have the image next to me so I can see what I am trying to re-create.

My part finished. Now it is time for Pam to work her magic with the buttons.

Close up!

Pam and I met in Madison and I handed over the painting and patiently waited for her to add the buttons so  I could see the finished piece.

I love the color of the buttons you chose!

The happy mom-to-be!!! I hope she loved it!

Pam message me if you would like to add anything to this post. Thank you for thinking of me to help with your gift. I really enjoyed painting the tree and love the look with the buttons on it.

5k Weekend Re-cap

Good Monday Morning! What a gorgeous weekend! This will be a long post I have a lot of pictures to share!! Let's start with Friday night. My roommate Christa and I went into Chicago to sleep over at her friend Angela's apartment so we were right downtown for the race Saturday morning. Angela said she wanted to take me to Lucky's Sandwich Shop. Once she mentioned Adam Richman from Man Vs. Food went there I knew exactly what she was talking about. I saw the show last year and wanted to check it out. Lucky's Sandwich Shop in Wrigleyville smashes coleslaw and fries into whichever meat sandwich you choose. Below is the Man Vs. Food Lucky's episode.

My photos:

Menu Board

My sandwich: roast beef, cheese, coleslaw and fries. The bread was amazing and really fresh. I wasn't an fan of the coleslaw, but I really enjoyed the sandwich.

Then we went back to Angela's apartment and watched Gnomeo and Juliet. Woke up at 7:30 am. to get ready. Race started at 9 am.

The race packet consisted of a long sleeve shirt, 2 power bars, shoe laces, coupons, and a pen. It all came in a reusable green bag.

Register now for the 4th annual Go Go Green 5k Run/Walk! —organized to raise awareness about our urban ecosystem, support Nature Museum programs and educate Chicagoans about living a more eco-friendly life. All proceeds will benefit the Museum's vision to be the urban gateway to nature and science.

During the race, we will transform the Lincoln Park footpath into a sea of green, as we ask all participants to dress the part. And the fun will continue after the race when the Nature Museum opens its doors, for a morning filled with "green" events and activities. From science experiments, to hanging out with some of the Museum's reptile species, to cooking demonstrations in Nature's LunchBox and learning about recycling (bring old batteries and gym shoes), the after-race will feature fun activities and learning opportunities to help connect all of us with nature and science – right in the heart of Lincoln Park.
Best of all, you and your family will have the opportunity to be the first to experience the Museum's brand new exhibition, Eww! What's Eating You?, which digs into the history of humans and our closest companions – the parasites that live inside us.

My photos of the event:

The group: Me, Christa, Steve and Angela

Half way done and still going strong!

Steve's girlfriend Amanda didn't want to run with us so she was nice enough to hold our things and take pictures for me. I felt so good during the race that we sprinted to the end and caught Amanda off guard. So you can't see me but I'm in there somewhere crossing the finish line!!

_____________________________________________

The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum was a major sponsor of the event and allowed participants in the race to walk the museum for free. So after the race we walked over to the museum to get our free cupcake and walk around the museum.

We walked through the "Eww! What's Eating You?"

Wheel of Misfortune. I got mosquito malaria.

_______________________________________________

Then we walked through the Butterfly Haven. It reminded me of the Olbrich Garden's Butterfly center in Madison.  It is just so magical to walk around in this warm, misty room to have butterflies swarming around you.

_______________________________________________

We then decided to try another restaurant that was featured on "Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives" Kuma's Korner. We got there right when it was about to open at noon and there was already a line and a full house. The wait was an hour and a half so we went across the street instead to Square Bar.
I took a picture of my meal because I liked that it was served on a tray instead of a plate.

Grilled chicken and pineapple on a pretzel bun. And a huge side of fries. This is a good after run meal right? :)

It is crazy to think all of this happened before 2pm Saturday. I accomplished so much and the weekend was just getting started! After lunch we left the city and drove back out to the suburbs. Took a long nap and then a large group of us went to Drink night club in Schaumburg. Drink is the old Alumni Club. I rarely go to clubs anymore but we had a lot of fun at Drink and I would definetely go back.

Sunday I slept in, went to Panera for lunch and sat there with my laptop waiting for the library to open. I picked up two more marketing books. They are both related to consumer buying behavior. I am really enjoying the first book: Buy.ology. I'm already half way through it.

I hope you had a jam packed weekend like I did. Please leave me a comment on what you did this weekend. Thanks! :)

Angel Food Cake Wine

It's Friday!! Anyone have big plans for the weekend? Do you have your halloween costume made/picked out? Well for me tomorrow is finally my big 5k! I made a promise to myself that I would run a 5k this year. I should have started preparing months ago, but o well. I should be ok. I have my roomies there to push me to continue running. I will give you a recap on Monday.

Bliss is located right downtown Wauconda.

Last night I met my friend Erica for a wine tasting at Bliss Wine and Gifts in Wauconda. Very cute little shop with a whole wall of wine selections, a handful of tables, and a stage for live music. Last night was a wine tasting up front, and a beer sampling in the back. Erica knew the guy who was performing for the live music. We got to sample 4 wines for free and then you could purchase a half glass or full glass of any of the four wines. We tried an angel food cake white, and angel food cake red, one that had tortoise in the name, and another red. They were all really good and I'm not a huge red wine fan. The event brought in a pretty large crowd, the place was packed. I had a really good time. The music was good, the wine was sweet and fruity, and the store had a lot of cute little gift ideas.

Erica and I at Bliss!

Have a great weekend everyone!

Wish me luck on my 5k!!  :)

Book: Sticky Marketing

I recently finished another marketing book: Sticky Marketing by Grant Leboff. Why everything in marketing has changed and what to do about it.  Sticky marketing discusses product promotion in an effort to make your product "stick" in the customer's mind. Customers want more now, simply shouting your product in their face will not work anymore.

Quotes from the book that I found valuable:

"The proliferation of digital technology has meant that individuals can now make video and audio recordings with relative ease.  In other words, people can now voice their opinions and broadcast a message in written, audio and visual formats and enjoy immediate distribution with virtually no coast at all.  What we have witnessed is the empowerment of the individual and the democratization of information." pg. 15

Customers have changed, communication has changed, therefore marketing must change.

By providing value to prospects and customers they, in turn, respond by giving their time.

The old mode ROI ( Return on Investment) to ROE (Return on Engagement).

"Marketers have routinely focused on conveying the benefits of their product or service to potential buyers. In order to become 'sticky' and engage prospects and customers, you have to stop focusing on transactions and find value around the product or service you deliver." pg. 51

"The principle, however, is this: in an engagement strategy, aim at the narrowest target market to which you can give the best experience and which will sustain your business to the level you require." pg. 97

"Customers are no longer pawns to be marketed to, for the sole purpose of generating transactions. A company's success is no longer down to how attractive a product or service can be made to look by a creative advertising campaign. The public at lagre now play an enormous part in the marketing of any offering." pg. 116

"However, this is no longer about an image that a company creates. Image does not get you good feedback or positive comments and reviews. You achieve that through a good reputation. In other words, modern marketing has moved from being about the image that companies create to the reputation that companie have." pg. 132

"Building credibility and demonstrating expertise and knowledge, by supplying good content, will enhance your reputation.  It is more important today than any image you may create." pg. 134

"This becomes increasingly important within the context of word of mouth.  We trust other customers, bloggers and reviewers more than companies themselves.  There is a plethora of ways for people to access the recommendations of tothers affor all of us to whos thwe wider community our likes and dislikes. Blogs, forums and review sites are just a few, as are websites which allow people to tag their favorite articles, videos and other content. Among these are sites such as Digg, Sphinn, Reddit and StumbleUpon." pg. 137

"There are more ideas available than we could all use in a lifetime.  It is no longer having knowledge that gives you power, as it is something to which we all have access.  Rather, it is the sharing of knowledge and expertise that gives you the attention of others. In a world where the scarcest resource is customer attention, attracting that attention will lead towards success." pg. 149

"Marketing is now about conversation and engagement, not broadcast and transactions." pg. 155

__________________________________________________

That last quote is the most powerful, and something I continue to hear. You must not simply push your content out onto the world- you must engage with your prospects and customers to create a life long bond. Throughout the book Grant talks about not shouting to your customers. He said it so much I felt like he was shouting that word. I think the word shouting appeared 100 times in this book. Overall a great book.

He mentioned a few things I wanted to look up:
1. Moonpig.com

Personalized greeting cards, printed and mailed.

He said the website remembers ocassions of cards he sent and will remind him a few days before that event the following year. Over time, it has an extensive catalogue of dates and addresses, which means no matter where he is in the world, he will never forget a special event.

2. Idea-a-day.com
http://ideaaday.org/  Where ideas are free.

Todays free idea:
Create a family restaurant where, once a month,
kids can cook for their families under the guidance of the restaurant’s chefs

Resume Writing

Monday I listened in on a resume writing webinar held by speaker Brenda Bernstein. I found the free webinar on one of the groups I follow on LinkedIn. It is always good to look over your resume and make sure yours is up-to-date. I have also learned how important it is to have a powerful LinkedIn profile.

You can watch the webinar here:
Top 10 Ways to Make Resume Writing Fun!
http://www.ilostmyjob.com/the-essay-expert/

You can find her on LinkedIn: Brenda Bernstein
On Twitter: TheEssayExpert
Online: http://theessayexpert.com/
If you subscribe to her news and updates on her website she will email you a free Ebook LinkedIn Power Tune-Up!

Ok here are the notes that I wrote down during the webinar:

1. Match the job description to your resume.

2. Don't write your resume so it will sound like everyone else.

3. Use power verbs and vary your verbs. (Google search Resume Power Verbs for a list of words.)

4. Add Numbers to your Resume.
How many of something? How much time you spent? How much money you saved?

5. Add your Accomplishments.
    How did you change/improve something?

6. Add Volunteer/Internship positions

7. You can add a quote at the bottom of your resume that speaks to who you are as a person for a personal touch.

8. Sans Serif fonts are most popular for Resumes.

9. http://www.wordle.net/ Wordle to find words to use. You can plug in the job description phrase and hit search. The bigger the words that appear on the screen the more often they are used. So choose the smaller words to plug into your resume.

10. PowerPoint Resumes???
Some of them are great. Check them out! It definitely has me thinking about creating a PowerPoint Resume for myself.

And as a side note: I reached 5,000 views!!!
Thank you to all of my lovely followers and those who continue to check my blog!!

Social Is The New Norm

I was at a publication seminar for work in Chicago this morning, and wasn't able to post until now. I found a great article on social media that I want to share with you. While on Facebook a status post from the American Marketing Association shared this link:

The State of Social Media 2011: Social is the New Norm

This article has some really interesting infographics from the recently released Nielsen Social Media Report.

1) Skeptics will now be recognized as laggards as they now officially stand in the way of progress. According to Nielsen, and well, reality, social media isn't a fad. The report opens with a key finding that social networks and blogs dominate how Americans spend their time online, which accounts for nearly 25% of their total time spent on the Internet.
2) Four out of five active internet users aka everyday people visit social networks.
3) Looking beyond the U.S., in 10 major global markets, social networks and blogs reach over 75% of active Internet users.
4) 60 percent of people who use three or more digital means of research for product purchases learned about a specific brand or retailer from a social networking site. And, 48% of these consumers responded to a retailer's offer posted on Facebook or Twitter.
5) 70 percent of active online adult social networkers shop online.
6) 53 percent of active adult social networkers follow a brand.
7) Tumblr nearly tripled its audience from just one year ago.

The most active on social media websites are 25-34 years old.

I only gave you some of the information. Go to the website to read the rest!!

Is She Trying To Win The T-Shirt??

Good Monday Morning!! Did you have a good weekend? I had a great weekend in Wisconsin. They always seem to go by so fast. Friday night Justin and I went to Buffalo Wild Wings with Dane and Veronica to watch the Brewers. Saturday I hung out with my family and we went to the Kaminski Bro's Chop House in the Dells. Amazing food, HUGE portions and great views. We went out to celebrate my brother beating cancer. The poor guy just had his wisdom teeth pulled so he couldn't enjoy a steak like the rest of us, but he had a large helping of Alaskan King crab! My mom and sister split the tenderloin filet, and my dad and I split the prime rib. We all shared the huge plate of loaded hashbrowns, sauteed mushrooms and asparagus. Apparently they have contest at Kaminiski Bro's Chop House that if you eat the whole double order of prime rib you win a T-shirt. I didn't think anything of it until they brought our food out and instead of placing the prime rib in front of my dad they put the giant "pot roast" as my mom called in front of me. This roast was 5 inches tall and 8 inches wide.  I'm not kidding you, the entire resturant was staring at me. I heard the people behind me say "Is she trying to win the T-shirt????" Or "She's going to try and eat all of that by herself?" OMG! I was so embarrased. Thankfully my mom reached over, cut off a chunk for me and handed the rest of the roast to my dad. Stuffed but still finding room for dessert we split the "slice" (the whole cake cut into fours) of red velvet cake that had a cream cheese frosting. Everything was really good and we walked out with a lot of leftovers.

Pumpkins!!

The wind has started to blow colder air which means summer is sadly gone. Time for bundling up and fall weather activities like: pumpkin carving! Last year was the first year in a long while that I carved a pumpkin. I just did the classic pumpkin face. By the time I cleaned out the inside of the pumpkin I just wanted to be done and eating the seeds!

The number 10 is for Chicago Blackhawks player Patrick Sharp!! :)

Since my pumpkin wasn't anything special. Let's see some photos of truly amazing pumpkin carvings!

54 Absolutely Stunning 3D Pumpkin Carvings

Ok now how about some pumpkin recipes:

Roasted Pumpkin Seeds

2 cups fresh pumpkin seeds, cleaned and dried
1 teaspoon sea salt
Non-stick cooking spray

1. Preheat the oven to 325ºF. Lightly spray a rimmed baking sheet with cooking spray.
2. Separate the seeds from the pulp of the pumpkin until you have two cups. Rinse them under cold water until all of the pumpkin flesh is gone. Then spread them on a paper towel and pat them dry.
3. Spread the seeds on the cooking sheet and sprinkle with salt. Bake for 25 minutes, or until seeds are golden brown. At the halfway mark turn the seeds with a wooden spoon so that they brown evenly.

Pumpkin Seed Pesto

Ingredients (enough for 4 cups of cooked pasta)
1/4 cup shelled, salted pumpkin/pepita seeds (roasted or unroasted)
1 Tablespoon grated Parmesan
1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
1/4 cup fresh basil, loosley packed
1/2 cup fresh parsley, loosley packed
1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil

Combine the seeds, parmesan and garlic in a food processor (I used a mini-processor) and pulse until seeds are finely ground. Add the basil and parsley and pulse. Pour the olive oil into the top of the processor and pulse every few seconds until well incorporated. If your processor does not have a small hole in the top, simply add a bit of the olive oil, pulse and repeat.

Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls

Ingredients
For Dough
1 1/2 cups wheat flour
2 1/2 – 3 1/2 cups bread flour
2 1/2 or teaspoons yeast (or one packet)
3 tablespoons brown sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ginger
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 can pumpkin puree
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup milk
2 eggs

For Filling
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 raisins
3 pieces candied ginger, minced
1 cup pecans, chopped
1 tablespoon cinnamon
Topping
Pre-made jarred Caramel Sauce

Method
1. Add all ingredients for the dough, except white bread flour, into your stand mixer bowl. Put on kneading hook and turn on low. Start adding the white flour little by little. Depending on your humidity (if it’s dry use less flour), but if it’s real humid like it is down here in Florida, you may have to use all the flour. The flour should be sticky, but coming away from the sides of the bowl. Knead the dough for 10 – 15 minutes on medium speed.
2. Transfer into a greased bowl, and cover with plastic wrap to let rise. You want it to double in size. (My kitchen was a little too cold so I made my oven into a proofer by putting a large bowl of hot water from the tap and placing it, along with the dough in the cold oven.
3. Place a 2 foot length of parchment paper on your counter. Lightly grease it with olive oil. Lightly grease your rolling pin. After the dough has doubled in size, transfer it to the parchment paper. Work with the dough, stretching, and rolling it until it is the size of the parchment paper, making sure to maintain an even thickness, and not tear the dough. It doesn’t have to be perfect.
4. Then combine filling ingredients in a separate bowl and mix well. Sprinkle the brown sugar mixture over the dough, leaving about an inch of the dough (on one of the short sides of your dough rectangle) free from sugar so so you can seal the ends.
5. Then carefully roll the dough, starting on a short side, not the long side of your rectangle of dough, so there is more rolling. After you’ve rolled it up, slice it in equal sized slices and place it in your baking pan. For baking, I tried two ways, the one in the photo is a large slice that I put in my jumbo muffin pan to bake, and others, I sliced them the width of my bread knife and baked them, sides touching, in a large circular cake pan. Both ways were tasty, the cake pan was easier, but the muffin pan was mush cuter. (If you use a muffin pan, arrange the roll so that the sides are tucked down a little more than the middle, or the middle might want to sink on you.)
6. After you transfer all your rolls to the pan. (You can stop here and refrigerate overnight so you can have fresh rolls in the morning.) Let the dough rise again, covered, until the rolls are puffed up. (They aren’t going to rise a whole lot.) Depending on your home’s temperature, you may want to use your oven as a proofer like I explained in step 2.
7. When you are ready to bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees. Bake for 25 – 30 minutes, or until rolls are lightly browned and set.
8. Drizzle caramel sauce on them and serve.

Have a great weekend!
Are you going to carve pumpkins this weekend?
