Since most of my inspiration for my blog posts have been coming from Pinterest (www.pinterest.com) I have been seeing art made out of crayons. Who knew you could make something so beautiful out of a childhood art supply.
This is the first version I saw of the idea. You superglue crayons to a canvas and use a blowdryer to make the crayons melt.
And then I saw this version and thought it was super cute and whimsical with the silhouette figures.
I like this version better than the straight line of crayons.
I found this version yesterday. Love the heart!
Love it!
Flowers!
I like the idea not the greens!
See non-artsy friends even you can make wall art! Anyone can melt a crayon!
Are you going to give it a try? Have you already made one? I would love to see it!

I'm totally going to try it!!
ReplyDeleteYay! I can't wait to see how yours turns out Heather! :)

thank you for the sites!
DeleteThis is such a great idea, and it looks somewhat easy. Even for me!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to know if they leave the crayon wax as it is, or is there something you can put over it to protect it, keep it from smearing or melting further? I'd like to do this on paper, and/or put it in an album. Any ideas on how to preserve the design?
ReplyDeleteHair spray
DeleteClear Poly Spray found in most craft stores. Its a spray on and come in matte, semi-gloss and gloss finishes. It works well on paper and you can control the amount by doing light coats.
DeleteHow would you do the silluete part, meaning, would you glue or tape it down or what?
ReplyDeleteI dont quite understand that part
Great questions! I'm not really finding any stickers to just apply to your canvas. I plan on making this craft soon. I was going to check out Michaels to see if they have anything otherwise I will probably draw something out on stencil paper, cut out the image and then paint a silhouette image.
ReplyDeletePwilli do you think you could Mod Podge over it to protect it?
so u just glue the crayons down and a hair dryer to make them melt? how come the crayons are still round? and how do u get them to run in different directions?
ReplyDeleteHi! I haven't tried it yet, but from what I have read you hot glue the crayons down, and use a hair dryer to make them melt on low setting. Maybe you aim the dryer towards the bottom and that is why the crayons still look perfect? You should prop your canvas against something so you get an angle and the wax will drip. By moving the hair dryer you can make them run in different directions. Or maybe halfway through it change the angle or hold the canvas with one had to tilt it slightly. Has anyone tried this yet?
ReplyDeleteHey Alicia!
DeleteI have gotten a lot of page views from you using my crayon art photo, THANK YOU!
I didn't check to see if you had done this yet or not, and I don't remember if I did a how to or not, but you actually want to use the hair dryer on a medium setting if you have one. Low doesn't melt it consistently and high sends wax EVERYWHERE.
I halfway hot glued my crayons to a cardboard box flap, then had it hang over my canvas. I didn't want crayons on the final product.
You want to try to stick to a few crayons at a time and keep the blow dryer facing a downward angle to keep the wax moving down the canvas as far as you like. If you want it to stop, taking the dryer off the crayons makes the wax dry up rather quickly. (Or you can of course rotate the canvas to move the wax in which ever direction.
Hope this helps!

Hi Alana,
DeleteThank you so much for commenting on my blog and giving me a how-to on your beautiful crayon art. Your example was one of my favorites. I can't believe how many views I myself have gotten from this one post.
Thanks,
Alicia
Pushing the peeled crayons through a hot glue gun is supposed to work the best.
ReplyDeleteI did this and I loved how it turned out :)
ReplyDeleteBrandi I would love to see a photo!!! :)

Thanks for your comment Tracey! I can't believe how many people I have checking out my blog because of this post!
DeleteTry going to Google type in free printable silhouettes and put in.. Might not be what your looking for but they are cute!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
DeleteLove all of these!
ReplyDeleteI really like the ones with the silhouettes! :)
DeleteWhen do you apply the silhouette? If before melting, how do you keep the crayons from running over it?
ReplyDeleteHow do you get the melted crayons to go in all directions on the heart one and the ones in a circle?
ReplyDeleteHey Alicia. Do you think this would be possible to do on poster board paper? Or does it have to be a canvas? I know that canvas paper is extremely expensive and I'm trying to save some money.
ReplyDeleteHi Jonesy. Honestly you can buy pre-stretched frame canvas from Michaels for cheap. Especially if you go in with a coupon. Depending on how big of a canvas you want you can get one for $5-10. I would be afraid of poster board warping from the crayon and heat. The canvas will hold up better. Let me know if you end up making one!
DeleteYou make some beautiful art. :) I cant believe how creative you are. <3 I'm definitely going to attempt this this weekend!
ReplyDeleteMy friend did this for an anniversary gift and it turned out amazing!
ReplyDeleteThis is awesome. I can't wait to try it. It's extremely versatile too! Use different shades of crayons to decorate different rooms. I'm all giddy and want to try it!
ReplyDeleteHey! I'm trying to do this and when I melt the crayons with the dryer it just melts into a big blob? How exactly do you do it and get it to drip down like that?
ReplyDeleteWhat kind of crayons can you us?
ReplyDeleteMy son has to make a gift for a friend at school for Christmas and we decided we are going to try this.
ReplyDeletearticle initiator http://casinogamesonlinee@blogspot.com
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to try it!
ReplyDeleteI tried it. And the crayons would not melt and I wasted canvas and crayons. I even tried the highest, hottest setting.
ReplyDeleteYou're doing it wrong then. Make sure you hold the blow dryer there for a while so that it can actually start to melt. Crayola crayons work best! :) It's also nifty if you just hold the crayon above the canvas with the blow dryer directly over it. It splats and makes it look awesome and gives you the ability to put it wherever you want!
